An early Thanksgiving Day call by an observant citizen landed four people in jail facing charges of burglary.
Devenick Thomas, 20, of Flomaton; Courtney Wiggins, 19, of McDavid, Fla.; Alphonso Wesley, 25, and Daniel Woods, 20, both of Flomaton were arrested after officers apprehended the group in the vicinity of the burglarized location.
At around 3 a.m. on Nov. 26, a call was made to the Escambia County Sheriff’s office reporting a burglary in progress at a business on Travis Road.
A witness stated they heard someone breaking into Anthony’s Country Store when the call was made, officials say.
The unidentified witness chased the suspects while on the phone with the department. As officers responded to the locations, the suspects continued to flee on foot.
In an attempt to apprehend the suspects, officers called for assistance from the K9 units from Fountain Correctional Facility in Atmore.
The suspects were located a short time later and were immediately arrested. Evidence of the entry and items taken from the business were identified in the case upon the arrest of the suspects, officials said.
All suspects were arrested and transported to the Escambia County Detention Center where they were booked on the charges against them.
Each suspect was charged with third-degree burglary, second-degree criminal mischief, third-degree theft of property and third degree trespassing.
Bond was set at $25,000 for each of the four suspects who remained in the Escambia County Detention Center as of press time.
Assisting the Escambia County Sheriffs Department in the investigation, apprehension and arrests of the suspects were the Brewton Police Department, East Brewton Police Department and Fountain Correctional Facility’s K9 team.
Sheriffs officials say the case remains under investigation.
