The 2011 Escambia County basketball tournament will be played Friday and Saturday, Dec. 16-17 at W.S. Neal High School.
The tournament will have a different format from past years. This year, instead of a round robin format with all teams playing each other and the team with the best record being crowned as champion, two teams will square off on Friday in both the boys and girls games and only the winners will advance to play Saturday with the winner of Saturday’s games being named tournament champion.
The tournament will begin Friday in East Brewton at 3:30 p.m. with Atmore and T.R. Miller’s girls squaring off followed by W.S. Neal and Flomaton’s girls playing at 5:30 p.m.
The losers of Friday’s games will be eliminated and the winners will advance to play for the championship Saturday at 9 a.m.
In the boys games, Atmore and T.R. Miller will play at 7:30 p.m. Friday and W.S. Neal and Flomaton will play at 9:30 p.m.
Like in the girls tournament, the losers from Friday night will be eliminated and the winners will advance and play for the championship Saturday at 11 a.m.
Last year in Brewton, Flomaton’s girls won the championship over T.R. Miller, ending the Lady Tigers three-year stint as champion. T.R. Miller had won seven of the last eight championships while Atmore won the tournament championship in 2006.
In the boys tournament last year, Atmore’s Blue Devils won for the third straight year and sixth year out of the last nine. T.R. Miller won the tournament in 2002, 2006 and 2007.
