Joseph A. ‘Joe’ Billy

Joseph A. ‘Joe’ Billy of Brewton, 84, died Sunday Nov. 27, 2011 in a Pensacola hospital. He was a native of Gateswood, in Baldwin County and was a resident of Brewton for 70 years. Billy and his wife operated Mack’s Moving and Storage for 40 years and he was a veteran of the U.S. Army from 1945-46. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Brewton where he served as a deacon, member of Baraca Sunday School and was a founder of the annual Wild Game Supper and Men’s Prayer Breakfast serving as cook for both events. He was also a longtime member of the Brewton Lion’s Club. He was preceded in death by one grandchild, Matthew Hutton Billy; a brother, Jake Billy; two sisters, Janet Grantham and Helena Everette.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ruth Mahone Billy of Brewton; two sons, Stephen M. (Beth) Billy, and Mack Billy; three grandchildren, Joseph, Stephen and Laurel Billy all of Brewton; one brother, Fred Billy of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; five sisters, Emma Lanier of Marbury, Ala.; Elaine Hinson of Tennessee; June Grantham, Jean Moore and Barbara Pitts all of East Brewton.
Visitation was held Wednesday, Nov. 30, at First Baptist Church of Brewton from noon to 1:30 p.m. with funeral services at 2 p.m. The Rev. Jack Fitts and the Rev. John Finkea officiated the services. Burial followed in Union Cemetery, Brewton with Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Brewton directing.
