Joseph A. ‘Joe’ Billy

Joseph A. ‘Joe’ Billy of Brewton, 84, died Sunday Nov. 27, 2011 in a Pensacola hospital. He was a native of Gateswood, in Baldwin County and was a resident of Brewton for 70 years. Billy and his wife operated Mack’s Moving and Storage for 40 years and he was a veteran of the U.S. Army from 1945-46. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Brewton where he served as a deacon, member of Baraca Sunday School and was a founder of the annual Wild Game Supper and Men’s Prayer Breakfast serving as cook for both events. He was also a longtime member of the Brewton Lion’s Club. He was preceded in death by one grandchild, Matthew Hutton Billy; a brother, Jake Billy; two sisters, Janet Grantham and Helena Everette.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ruth Mahone Billy of Brewton; two sons, Stephen M. (Beth) Billy, and Mack Billy; three grandchildren, Joseph, Stephen and Laurel Billy all of Brewton; one brother, Fred Billy of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; five sisters, Emma Lanier of Marbury, Ala.; Elaine Hinson of Tennessee; June Grantham, Jean Moore and Barbara Pitts all of East Brewton.
Visitation was held Wednesday, Nov. 30, at First Baptist Church of Brewton from noon to 1:30 p.m. with funeral services at 2 p.m. The Rev. Jack Fitts and the Rev. John Finkea officiated the services. Burial followed in Union Cemetery, Brewton with Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Brewton directing. Condolences may be sent and obituaries can be read at williamsmemorialchapel.com.
