The 2011 Escambia County basketball tournament scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Dec. 16-17 at W.S. Neal High School has been revised.
The 2011 tournament will have a different format from past years as in years past, a round robin format with all teams playing each other was played and the team with the best record being crowned as champion.
This year, the tournament will begin Friday at 3:30 p.m. with Atmore taking on T.R. Miller’s girls followed by the boys game at 5:15 p.m.
At 7 p.m., W.S. Neal’s girls will play Flomaton and the boys game will follow at 8:30 p.m.
On Saturday, the losers from Friday’s girls games will begin play at 11 a.m. to decide the third and fourth place teams and will be followed by the Friday boys losers at 1 p.m.
At 3 p.m., the winners of the girls games from Friday will play at 3 p.m. for first and second place followed by the boys winners from Friday at 5 p.m. to decide the boys champion.
Originally, no consolation games were scheduled for Saturday with only winners advancing to play. T.R. Miller’s boys and girls teams were scheduled to play Atmore while W.S. Neal was set to take on Flomaton on Friday in both the boys and girls games. Only the winners were to advance to play Saturday with the winner of Saturday’s games being named tournament champion.
Last year in Brewton, Flomaton’s girls won the championship over T.R. Miller, ending the Lady Tigers three-year stint as champion. T.R. Miller had won seven of the last eight championships while Atmore won the tournament championship in 2006.
In the boys tournament last year, Atmore’s Blue Devils won for the third straight year and sixth year out of the last nine. T.R. Miller won the tournament in 2002, 2006 and 2007.
