Neighbors greeted each other on Evergreen Avenue Friday night as they lit luminaries to welcome visitors on a holiday path.
Janice Smith, an organizer of the event, said the idea came as a way of mingling with neighbors while showing the holiday spirit.
“Some of us that live along the street started talking about doing something to get together and have a good time,” Smith said. “Some of us don’t even know who our neighbors are. This will give us the opportunity to meet and greet each other all in the spirit of Christmas.”
One way the group will be highlighting the event will give the street a special glow through Sunday evening.
“We decided having luminaries along the sidewalks would be a great way to get to know our neighbors and have a good time together,” Smith said. “We want to show our Christmas spirit beginning at 5 p.m. each night. On Sunday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. we plan on having a dessert party under the big red tent that will be placed in the 600 block. Each person is asked to bring their favorite sweet or salty treats and bring something to drink. We also encourage all that come to join us to bring along a friend or two.”
Smith said that there is a block captain who will keep things running smoothly on their block.
What began as a street block party has taken on a life of its own and now includes the length of Evergreen Avenue, Smith said.
Luminaries will be lit by 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday for visitors and residents to enjoy. There is no charge for the event.
Evergreen Avenue residents have asked those who drive down the street to enjoy the display, to be mindful of those walking throughout the area. Be mindful of speed and for pedestrians crossing the street.
“We want this to be a fun time for the whole community,” Smith said.
