Bowl games and their gifts

Published 3:12 pm Thursday, December 29, 2011

Well, it is four days after Christmas and I hope your Christmas was a great one.
Yes, this has a sports theme behind it.
College bowl season is upon us and going strong and for those of you who do not realize it, those teams who are fortunate enough to make the bowl games are given gifts.
Bowls are allowed to spend $500 on each player and the gifts continue to flow freely at the bowl games.
There are 35 bowl games with 70 teams going bowling.
Some of the hottest bowl gifts given to participants this year are gift suites, Oakley sunglasses and other Oakley products, New Era caps, souvenir footballs and mini helmets.
Other key electronics given to bowl participants this bowl season are PS3s to participants in the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl. Over seven bowl games are giving out Best Buy gift cards and over 15 bowls are given out Fossil watches or other types of watches.
The R+L Carriers bowl gave their two teams Samsung Galaxy Tablets while the Military Bowl gave out Amazon Kindle Fires and Apple iPod nanos.
If you were a participant in the Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas you could be getting a Toshiba 32-inch flat-screen television.
Back in 2007 when I wrote a column concerning this topic, the hot gift given out to bowl participants was the Nintendo Wii.
Not everyone was lucky to get the Wii, but iPods, Best Buy shopping sprees along with HD TVs were given as consolation prices against the Nintendo Wii — if you want to call those consolation gifts. I would take an iPod, iPhone or a Best Buy shopping spree.
How nice it would be to get all these gifts for just making a bowl game.
I want to wish everyone a Happy New Year as 2011 comes to an end and 2012 approaches.
Until we meet again here or out in the world of sports, God bless.
