The famed Second City Company is bringing its brand of improvisational comedy to Brewton next week.
The show, the second produced by the Brewton Council of the Arts for the 2011-2012 season, will be held Thursday, Feb. 2 in the Woodfin-Patterson Auditorium on the campus of Jefferson Davis Community College on Alco Drive. Curtain time for the show is 7 p.m.
Clay Lisenby, president of the Brewton Council of the Arts said this production will be a lot of fun for area residents — and will be family friendly.
“We are very fortunate to have a performance of this caliber coming to Brewton,” Lisenby said. “‘The Second City’ is the leading brand in improv-based sketch comedy similar to that seen on popular shows like ‘Saturday Night Live.’ Many of today’s top names in comic talent got their start with ‘The Second City’, such as Tina Fey, Steve Carrell, Mike Meyers, and Stephen Colbert are just a few of the easily recognized comedians produced by ‘The Second City.’ Keeping a family-oriented audience in mind, we have asked for the ‘clean’ version of their show — meaning no profanity.”
Second City specializes in sketch comedy and for 50 years has been bringing laughter to those who attend one of the performances. It will feature social and political satire and no one will escape it. In addition to those already mentioned who received a boost in their careers from the group are, Bill Murray, John and Jim Belushi, Joan Rivers, John Candy and many others.
Second City has theaters in Chicago and Toronto, as well as training centers in those cities and in Hollywood. The company also has 11 touring companies and operations in film and television.
“I hope everyone will take advantage of the opportunity to come out and enjoy a night of world class comedy right here in our own town,” Lisenby said.
Tickets for the event are $15 for adults and $8 for students. Season tickets are still available from BCA members or at performances planned for the season. Individual tickets will be available at the door on the evening of the show.
