Katie Peavy will be spending the weekend in Montgomery — hoping to come home with the title of Miss Alabama USA.

Peavy’s Facebook site on the internet has paid off with more than a few new friends. Being a part of the competition all began because of her Facebook page.

“I had entered into some competitions in Monroeville and Andalusia, such as Miss Liberty and Miss Sweetheart,” Peavy said. “They were all small competitions and I knew that the youngest age for Miss Alabama contestants was 19-26. While checking my Facebook I had a message from someone wanting me to sign up for the Miss Alabama competition.”
Not only did she apply. She was accepted and will represent Escambia County ithis weekend at the Performing Arts Center in Montgomery.
“I’m very excited about being a part of this competition,” Peavy said. “I have a trainer, Bill Alverson, who has worked with several girls before. He coaches us on how to act, the way to walk and how to respond to questions. He is very good and I have learned a lot from him.”
The contestants will be judged in four categories, evening gown, interview, on stage question and swim-wear. Each category counts for a certain percentage of the final score and there is no talent category.
Peavy attended T.R. Miller until her senior year. At that time, she switched to an online private Christian school, where she finished her high school degree.
“I would advise anyone thinking about dropping out of school and making such a big decision,” Peavey said. “It’s just a personal thing to me, but in general, it’s best to stay in school.”
Peavy is the daughter of Cameron and Heidi Knapp of Brewton.
