Area tourney underway for WSN, TRM

The 2012 AHSAA area basketball tournament pairings have been set statewide and on the local level for W.S. Neal and T.R. Miller.

Girls area tournaments began Monday with the regular season area champions hosting. Boys area tournaments will begin today (Tuesday)  also at the home of regular season area champions.
T.R. Miller’s girls finished their 3A area 1 schedule with a 6-2 record and took the No. 2 spot and will travel to area winner Clarke County in Grove Hill. The T.R. Miller boys will also travel to Clarke County. The varsity Tigers finished area play with a 2-6 record and finished as the No. 4 seed.
Both the W.S. Neal Lady Eagles and varsity Eagles will travel for their area tournaments.
W.S. Neal’s Lady Eagles finished the regular season area play with a 1-7 record while the boys finished 0-8.
The Lady Eagles will travel to Jackson for their tournament as the No. 5 seed while the varsity Eagles will travel to Hillcrest-Evergreen, also as the No. 5 seed.
In the finals class 3A area 1 girls standings, Clarke County finished first followed by Bayside Academy, T.R. Miller, Excel and Washington County. In the boys final standings, Clarke County finished first followed by Bayside Academy, Washington County, T.R. Miller and Excel.
The area tournaments will be single elimination format.
Winners of the area tournaments will host sub-region games the following week while the area runner-ups will travel to their sub-region opponent.
Class 3A area 1 would be paired with area 4 in the sub-region round which includes LAMP, Montgomery Academy, Montgomery Catholic and Trinity.
Class 4A area 2 is paired with area 3 which would be Andalusia, Ashford, Headland and Straughn.
Winners of sub-regional games will advance to the regionals at the University of South Alabama in Mobile.
Winners from the four regional sites across the state will advance to the state tournament in Birmingham for the Final 4 of each of the six classifications for girls and boys to makeup the Final 48 participants.
T.R. Miller was scheduled to end their regular season at home Friday night against Hillcrest while W.S. Neal was set to travel to Flomaton.
Before Friday’s games, W.S. Neal girls had an overall record of 4-17 and the boys had a record of 3-21. T.R. Miller’s girls were 13-9 overall and the varsity Tigers were 7-12.
T.R. Miller girls:
The Lady Tigers will travel to Clarke County Thursday and will play the No. 2 seed Bayside Academy Lady Admirals. The two teams split in the regular season with the home team winning each game.
No. 5 seed Washington County and No. 4 seed Excel will begin the tournament Tuesday at 5 p.m. with the winner taking on No. 1 seed Clarke County Thursday at 7 p.m. T.R. Miller and Bayside Academy will play Thursday at 5:30 p.m. The winners from Thursday’s games will play for the area tournament Saturday at 7 p.m.
T.R. Miller boys:
The varsity Tigers will also travel to Clarke County and will begin play Tuesday, Feb. 7, against Excel at 6:30 p.m. T.R. Miller won both games against Excel this season.
The winner of Tuesday’s game will play No. 1 seed Clarke County Friday at 7 p.m. Also Friday, No. 3 seed Washington County will play No. 2 seed Bayside at 5:30 p.m. The winner of Friday’s games will play for the area tournament championship Monday at 7 p.m.
W.S. Neal girls:
The Lady Eagles will play their class 4A area 2 tournament at Jackson.
According to W.S. Neal Eagle head coach Kason Whitten, W.S. Neal will play Hillcrest at 6 p.m. Hillcrest won both games this season against W.S. Neal.
Complete bracket information for the tournament was not known as of press time.
W.S. Neal boys:
According to Whitten, the varsity Eagles will play travel to Hillcrest Tuesday and will play Thomasville at 6 p.m. Thomasville defeated the Eagles in both their regular season games this season.
