Brewton’s Piggly Wiggly supermarket, owned by Southern Family Markets, may see some changes in the future with their parent company positioned once again to change.

Whether or not the change in ownership will cause changes at the local retail store has not been revealed by officials with the companies involved in the acquisition or the sale.

Birmingham-based Southern Family Markets plans to sell its 57 stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Mississippi to Belle Foods LLC under an agreement announced today by the companies.

Southern Family Markets stores operate under banners including Food World, Piggly Wiggly, Bruno’s and Southern Family Markets.

Belle Foods LLC was formed to purchase Southern Family Markets stores, and it is headquartered in Birmingham. It was formed by industry veteran William “Bill” White, who is the president and CEO.

White has worked in retail and wholesale distribution for the past 30 years. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

“We are very excited about this acquisition and look forward with great anticipation to growing this business, being strong partners in the communities we will serve and bringing back the family-owned roots which have always made these stores so special,” White said in a prepared statement.

Southern Family Markets President Max Henderson said the purchase brings great opportunities to many.

“It will allow the business to continue its commitment to its communities, to develop and grow its associates and to improve operations,” he said in a statement.

Belle Foods said it intends to offer jobs to Southern Family Markets employees and work with representative unions through the transition.

In 2009, Southern Family Markets purchased 31 Bruno’s and Food World stores following the bankruptcy of their former owner, Birmingham-based Bruno’s Supermarkets LLC.
