Scoreless through seven innings Monday in Flomaton, the W.S. Neal Eagle baseball team squandered a 2-0 lead in the eighth inning to fall to the Hurricanes 3-2.
The loss for the Eagles of East Brewton dropped them to 10-4 overall this season.
The JV Eagles lost 7-1 to fall to 2-4-1, but no information or stats from that game was known as of press time.
In the varsity game Monday in Flomaton, the game was scoreless after regulation and went into extra innings with all the runs coming in the eighth and the Eagles taking the loss by one.
Both teams had four hits while W.S. Neal had two costly errors in the bottom of the eighth inning while Flomaton made no errors.
Keith Bradley had a single in the third inning but W.S. Neal did not get another hit until the top of eighth inning.
Brian Settle led off the eighth inning getting hit by a pitch and Hunter Mullins followed with a bunt single between the pitcher and first base for the Eagles in the inning.
Jeremy Myers followed with a pinch hit and got a bunt single down the third base line and Cam Blackman came up with the bases loaded for the Eagles and singled up the middle to score Settle and Mullins to give W.S. Neal a 2-0 lead. Myers would be thrown out at third on the play and the next two hitters flew out for the Eagles in the inning.
In the bottom of eighth inning with W.S. Neal up 2-0, Flomaton got a leadoff walk followed by a pop up for the first out. After another walk, a single to left field scored to cut the lead to 2-1 with runners on first and second.
The Eagles would get a double play ground ball, but the Eagles made an error on the play and the runner on second scored to tie game. The next Flomaton batter followed with another ground ball that the Eagles booted and the winning run scored to give the Hurricanes the win.
Brian Settle started on the mound for the Eagles and took the no decision. He struck out eight, allowed three hits, five walks and no runs.
Tyler Joyner took the loss going 1/ 3 of an inning and allowed three runs, one earned, and walked two.
