D.W. McMillan Hospital will be hosting their fourth annual Relay for Life 5K Run/Walk for a Cure 2011 Saturday, March 31 at 8 a.m.
The race is to raise money for the American Cancer Society.
Ruthie Cooper is coordinating the 5K Run/Walk and said the race is a fun event and the money raised is really needed to fight against cancer and the participants really seem to enjoy this. Past races have seen over 100 runner participate with all seeming to have a good time.
“I would like to get 200 or more participants this year but unfortunately we have only about 10 registrations at this point,” Cooper said.
Cooper said the course would be the same as last year.
“The race will begin in front of Encore Fitness Center,” she said. “When we leave Encore going toward the hospital, turn right on Elliott Street to Belleville, turn right on Belleville and take a left on Smith Street, then take a left on Escambia Avenue. We will then proceed on Escambia all the way to the high school. From there, we will take a right on Rotch Street. The circle in front of the high school has to be made twice, and once it has been made twice then runners will proceed to the sidewalk along Douglas Avenue over to Tiger Drive, past the stadium. Next, they take a left on Belleville and proceed along Belleville on the left hand side of the road until they get to the cross walk in front of the Y. From there, they will cross over Belleville and proceed down Belleville back to Elliott Street and end at Encore.”
There will be an overall winner for male and female and then there will be prizes for each age group.
Early registration for the event is currently going and will end Friday, March 24. The fee for adults is $20 and the fee for kids 8-14 is $10.
Race day registration will be from 7:30-8 a.m. with the adults fee increasing to $22 while the kids will remain at $10.
Registration forms can be mailed or dropped off at D.W. McMillan Hospital, P.O. Box 908, Brewton, AL, 36427 with attention made to Ruthie Cooper.
