JDCC baseball shutout by Faulkner Thursday at home

There was a lack of hitting, which led to a lack of runs for the Jefferson Davis Community College Warhawk baseball team Thursday at home against Faulkner State as they took a 7-0 conference loss.
The Warhawks were held to only four hits and no runs as they dropped to 14-18 overall and to 4-9 in conference play.
But although there was the lack of hits and runs, it was the lack of intensity that head coach Darrell Blevins saw from his team Thursday that bugged him the most.
“Our intensity was not at the level that it needed to be at today against a team like Faulkner,” Blevins said. “We just didn’t have the fight we needed. You have to give (Faulkner’s pitcher) credit, he did a great job pitching, but we have to fight harder and that is the bottom line.”
While the Warhawks were held to no runs in the loss and only four hits, Faulkner State pounded out 13 hits and scored at least one run in all but three innings. Of the 13 Sun Chief hits, 11 were singles with the other two being doubles.
“For whatever reason, our game plan or whatever today just backfired,” Blevins said. “I don’t think the pitching did bad, but we thought busting them up to throw two, two, two (two innings each), that it would give us a chance. If we could get today’s game that it would give us a better chance to get one or both on Saturday without losing any of our pitchers because they should be able to bounce back. The biggest thing was we had nowhere close to the intensity level that we are going to need or that we had last weekend when we played. We will go back to work (Friday) and try to get ready again for it again (today).”
Faulkner State led JDCC 1-0 after the first inning and would later add two runs in the third inning, one in the fourth and fifth innings, and one each in the seventh and eighth innings to get the win by seven.
Dillan Schaniel led JDCC at the plate as he was 2-for-4 with a single in the third and eighth innings.
Corey Lane was 1-for-4 and Nathan Edwards was 1-for-4 with a double in the fifth inning.
JDCC used five pitchers in the loss with Corey Thompson getting the start and being the pitcher of record. Thompson went two innings and allowed one hit, one earned and hit one batter.
John Williams went the next two innings and allowed three hits, three earned runs, walked, struck out and hit one batter.
Michael Yarborough went the next two innings and allowed three hits, one earned run, walked and struck out one.
Tyler Moore went the next two and allowed five hits, and two earned runs. Tyler Howell went the final inning allowing one hit and struck out one.
JDCC left seven runners on base in the loss with four in scoring position while Faulkner left six on. Of the 27 outs for JDCC, 10 were fly ball outs, seven were strikeouts and 10 were groundball.
Faulkner and JDCC will play again today (Saturday) in Brewton. The teams will play a doubleheader scheduled for noon at Warhawk Field.
