Eric Wayne Haskew, 23, of Brewton, Alabama was remanded to the Custody of the Department of Corrections after Circuit Court Judge Charles Lex
Short denied his request for probation Tuesday.
Haskew, Joshua Gradless and Cody Grantham were all arrested on July
28, 2010 for the offenses of Theft of Property I for their involvement
in the scrapping of the metal trusses at Hart’s Bridge. Both Gradeless
and Grantham had previously been denied probation by Short and are now
serving their sentences.
“Deputy Mike Vigor and Investigator Greg Jackson at the Sheriff’s
Department broke this case wide open. Were it not for Deputy Vigor
being so diligent during his patrol, we may not have ever caught these
guys,” noted District Attorney Walt Merrell. “Investigator Jackson
came to the scene and after he recovered all of the evidence and
interviewed all of the defendants, he had an air tight case.”
Haskew pled guilty to Theft of Property in the Second Degree and was
sentenced to five years in prison. He was also ordered to pay
restitution to the Covington County Commission in the amount of
$3,428.89 for the damage done to the bridge.
