Padres 9, Phillies 8
Despite a furious comeback bid that netted seven runs in the final inning, the Phillies fell one run short when a two-out, bases-loaded ground ball ended the threat and the game in the season-opener for both teams. The second game of their scheduled double-header was rained out and was to be played Friday night.
The Padres (1-0) had held to a tight 3-1 lead through four innings, but seven fifth-inning errors led to a six-run outburst and allowed the Padres to take a 9-1 lead going into the Phillies’ final at-bat. In all, the Phillies committed 10 errors while the trio of starters Joshua Winton, Caleb Winton and Jordan Williams yielded just four hits and one earned run to the Padres.
By comparison, the Padres only committed two errors, but yielded 10 walks while the pitching foursome of starter Justin Session, Rob Jones, Hunter Colley and Lane Chavers allowed but five hits. Tyler Hoomes led the Padres with two hits, including an RBI double. Chris Jones also had a run-scoring double and Colby Morris added the other hit, an RBI single.
The Phillies (0-1) were led by Tripp Floyd’s 2-for-3 night at the plate, which included an RBI double. Jake Najor had a two-run single, while Jared Cooper and Williams each contributed singles.
