Canning class set for Thursday

Gardens are planted and summer produce is beginning to be harvested.
In an effort to help area residents cut their grocery store bill, staff at the Escambia County Extension Office are plannig a special class aimed at the preservation of garden bounty this year — all free of charge.
The class, set for Thursday evening, from 6 to 8 p.m., will focus on the most up-to-date methods of food preservation as suggested by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Participants of the class will learn the art of canning fruit and vegetables using the best method possible to ensure a good quality product.
Methods of food canning to be demonstrated will include water bath canning and high-pressure canning. The differences will be explained and examples of appropriate use will be shown.
Methods vary for fruits and vegetables and knowledgeable staff will present information to determine the best method of preserving a variety of food items.
Advance registration is necessary and can be made by calling the Escambia County Extension (251) 867-7760. Staff members will also be available to provide any additional information requested concerning the class.
The Escambia County Extension office is located on South Boulevard on Agriculture Drive, just behind Southern Pine Electric Cooeprative’s main office.
