Douglas Avenue/Hwy. 31 to close Monday

Monday morning may create a traffic issue through Brewton as the second street closing for repairs is required.

Ray Madden, with the City of Brewton utilities department, said the closing planned on Douglas Avenue is required to allow for repairs to a water main.

Sgt. Bryan Davis, with the Brewton Police Department, said motorists who travel through Brewton could face some delays and other issues connected with the street closing.

“Right now we have a portion of Hwy. 41 closed for repairs and this will close down a portion of Hwy. 31,” Davis said. “That’s going to be a problem, especially for big vehicles like 18-wheelers.”

Madden said the closing will be on a section of Douglas Avenue, which is also the Hwy. 31 route, from Underwood to Granberry Streets.

“We are expecting the street to be closed beginning at about 7 a.m. on Monday,” Madden said. “The work could take as much as six hours to complete.”

Davis said motorists should avoid the construction areas if at all possible.

“We will have officers along the route to help guide drivers through the detour areas,” Davis said. “But, as much traffic as we can keep out of the area as possible, would make things better for everyone. We will have everyone detouring down Belleville Avenue and that will cause some issues. If we have 18-wheelers trying to get through, I really don’t know how we’re going to do that. We’re trying to get the word out to drivers of those big trucks to make alternate travel plans. The Alabama Department of Transportation will have some signs up in the Castleberry area to alert drivers of the detours.”

Madden said workers will complete the repairs as quickly as possible with traffic returning to normal as soon as possible.
