The Brewton Police Department exercised their long arm of the law Saturday by reaching all the way to Montgomery to take a wanted man into custody.
Jermaine Spears, the focus of a manhunt spanning more nearly three weeks, was taken into custody at a Montgomery residence Saturday, according to Brewton Police Sgt. Patrick Caylor,
“We received a tip on Wednesday that Spears was seen near his home,” Caylor said. “We responded to that tip and made contact with Spears in the East Jackson and Sowell Road areas, but he was able to elude at that time.”
Additional tips through the remainder of the week lead Brewton police on searches of the wanted man.
Sgt. Bryan Davis said a tip Thursday lead officers to an area near a convenience store on Douglas Avenue.
“An officer spotted him after receiving the tip and we were able to chase him for a distance on Belleville Avenue,” Davis said. “We lost contact with him at that point. We called in tracking dogs to aid in the search, but after a distance, the dogs lost the scent. We believe he was picked up by someone in the area.”
Caylor said the Saturday apprehension was the result of several law enforcement agencies working together to capture Spears.
“We received a tip on Saturday letting us know that Spears was trying to make his way to Montgomery,” Caylor said. “We made contact with Montgomery police and gave them the address of the residence Spears was trying to get to. They were able to locate the residence and were able to take Spears into custody. I think it’s obvious that you can run, but you just can’t hide.”
Caylor said the investigation into the case is continuing with at least one other person arrested in connection with Spears evasion of police.
“During the process of our investigation and search for Spears, we have made an arrest of someone who was helping Spears avoid arrest,” Caylor said. “We are continuing the investigation and we will have other arrests in this case.”
Morris Brown was arrested Saturday by Brewton police and was charged with first-degree hindering prosecution. He was transported to the Escambia County Detention Center where he was booked on the charges. He was freed on a $10,000 bond.
Spears was originally wanted on domestic violence charges stemming from an incident in early May.
At the time of the incident, Caylor said Spears was a suspect involving a female at a local motel.
“He is believed to have gotten into an argument with her over a comment and it escalated,” Caylor said. “We believe he took her to a room at the Colonial Manor where he is suspected of causing her bodily harm.”
In addition to being charged with domestic violence, Spears now faces several counts of attempting to elude law enforcement, Davis said.
Bond for Spears had not been set of press time Tuesday.
