Brewton BR 14s currently 2-1 at state tourney in Monroeville

Through three games at the state Babe Ruth 14-year-old tournament in Monroeville, Brewton’s all-stars stood with a 2-1 record in the nine-team pool play tournament.
Brewton started with a 6-4 win over Elba Saturday before winning a late night game against Millbrook 7-2 in eight innings. Brewton’s game against Millbrook was scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday, but weather forced the game to begin after 9 p.m. and ended in the midnight hour Sunday.
In the third game of the tournament Sunday afternoon, Brewton lost to Monroe County 8-4.
Brewton was set to play Mims Park at 7 p.m. Monday.
If Brewton qualifies as one of the top-four teams in the tournament, they will advance to the single elimination tournament Tuesday.
In the semifinals Tuesday, the fourth place team will play the first place team at 10 a.m. while the third place team will play the second place team at 1 p.m. Winners from the semifinals games will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday night for the state championship game.
All games will be played at Veterans Park in Monroeville.
No stats were known as of press time for Brewton’s 8-4 loss to Monroe County Sunday night.

Saturday game one: Brewton 6, Elba 4
The Brewton 14-year-old Babe Ruth all-stars showed in their first game of the state tournament against Elba Saturday that it is not how you start but how you finish.
After falling behind 3-0 to Elba in the top of the first inning, Brewton outscored Elba 6-1 the remainder of the game—including plating four runs in the third inning—to help get a 6-4 win and start the tournament 1-0.
Elba would carry their 3-0 lead over Brewton into the bottom of the third when Brewton was able to take a 4-3 lead. After a scoreless fourth inning for both teams, Elba tied the game at 4-4 with one run in the fifth inning. Brewton would get two runs in the sixth inning to take a 6-4 lead and held Elba scoreless in the seventh to take the win.
Dakota Graves kept Brewton in the game on the mound as he came in relief of starter Tim McDonald in the first inning. McDonald went 1/3 of an inning and allowed two hits, three runs and walked two. Graves would go the next 4 2/3 innings and allowed one hit, one run, walked and struck out four and hit two batters.
Dalton Shell relieved Graves in the top of the sixth inning and allowed one hit and walked one. Lane Chavers closed out the game to get the win as he went the final two innings and allowed no hit, no runs, no walks and struck out three.
At the plate for Brewton, Malcolm Hawthorne had two singles and one RBI while Tripp Floyd had a single and one RBI. Graves added one RBI and Jared Cooper had two singles. Sam Frazier and Jake Najor had a single each.
Chavers scored two runs for Brewton while Floyd, McDonald, Shell and Najor scored one run each.

Saturday game two: Brewton 7, Millbrook 2- 8 innings
After having to endure over a five-hour delay from when their game was scheduled to begin and when it began, the Brewton all-stars earned a 7-2 win over Millbrook in eight innings to improve to 2-0 in the tournament.
The two teams played to a scoreless tie through three innings before Brewton scored one run in the fourth to take a 1-0 lead. After a scoreless fifth and sixth innings for both teams, Brewton added one run in the seventh to grab a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the inning, Millbrook scored two runs to tie the game and force extra innings. In the extra eighth frame, Brewton score five runs and held Millbrook scoreless to win by give, 7-2.
Jared Cooper had a no-hitter going into the seventh inning, but surrendered an RBI single by Millbrook to break up his no-hit bid.
Cooper pitched 6 1/3 innings and allowed one earned run, two total on one hit. Cooper walked nine and struck out 11. Chavers went the final 1 2/3 inning to get the win in relief as he struck out two.
Shell helped Brewton take the lead for good in the eighth inning. After Cooper doubled to start the eighth, he then went from second to third. Shell came to the plate with the score tied at two and singled scoring Cooper.
At the plate for Brewton, Hawthorne went 1-for-4 and Chavers went 2-for-5. Floyd went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs while McDonald went 3-for-5 with a double and also had two RBIs. Graves went 1-for-5 with a double and Cooper went 2-for-4 with a double. Najor also went 2-for-4 and Shell was 2-for-3 with one RBI.

Sunday: Monroe County 8, Brewton 4
Brewton suffered their first loss of the state tournament Sunday to host Monroe County as they lost 8-4.
Brewton trailed Monroeville 1-0 after the first and second innings before tying the game a 2-2 with two runs in the bottom of the third inning after Monroeville took a 2-0 lead in the top half of the inning.
From there, Monroeville would take a 7-2 lead in the fifth, but Brewton cut the lead to three in the sixth inning after scoring two runs to cut the lead to 7-4. Monroeville scored one in the seventh inning and held Brewton scoreless to get the win by four.
