The John L. Fisher Community Center board members have been working hard in prepartion for a weekend event to celebrate children, families and back-to-school — all in one extravaganza of fun.
Activities begin at 10:30 a.m. on the site of the old Brewton Middle School and will end at 1 p.m.
Stephanie Walker, one of the organizers for Saturday’s event, said plenty of work has gone into creating a schedule of activities to get families thinking about sharing and being involved in education.
“We will have several things going on at the Center to encourage family activities,” Walker said. “There will be some really fun things, including a jumper, that will help get kids moving.”
Walker said books will be given to each child as they participate in the reading station planned during the event.
“Dr. Marsha Raulerson will have books on hand to read to children who come to the event,” Walker said. “Nurses from Jefferson Davis Community College will be on hand to do some reading, either one-on-one or in small groups. The children who come to the reading station will receive a book from Dr. Marsha’s reading program when they leave.”
Walker said there will also be an art project area available to children of all ages.
“We will have several art projects to choose from Saturday,” Walker said. “They can choose a project or choose a couple of projects to do at the art center.”
The Brewton Brotherhood Group will also be organizing an array of physical activities including kickball, volleyball, basketball and other games to get families up and moving, Walker said.
Following the activities portion of the extravaganza, families will be treated to a visit from the K9 unit of the Brewton Police Department who will give a demonstration and discuss their duties for the force, Walker said.
A picnic lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m. with lunch and all activities offered free of charge.
“This is just our way of encouraging kids and parents to spend some quality time togehter,” Walker said. “This is a great opportunity for us to remind people that reading and playing with your children is important. It doesn’t take a lot of money or energy to just get together and do fun things with the whole family.”
Other members of the group of oranizers for the event include Joe Watson, Alline Emmanuel, Robin Griffin, Marsha Raulerson and Clint Daniels.
The John L. Fisher Community Center is located in the former Brewton Middle School on Liles Boulevard just of Sowell Road in Brewton.
