After dismal weather conditions forced postponement of its first two games, the Brewton Middle School Tigers finally got on the field Thursday night and created a storm of its own as it traveled to Monroe County and blew its hosts away with a 32-0 victory.
In doing so, coach Gerald McAnally’s crew exhibited a balance of tenacious defense with pinpoint offense to start the season off on the right foot.
The defense, which yielded Monroe County a total of zero yards and just two first downs, was led by JoJo Booker’s 11 tackles (8 solo), while fellow linebacker Hunter Brittain added 8 tackles (5 solo) and defensive end Joshua Winton contributed 7 tackles (3 solo). When it was all said and done, Monroe County only passed the 50-yard line twice as the Tigers also had two takeaways. Marcus Paul caused and recovered a fumble while safety Caleb Winton intercepted Monroe County’s only pass attempt of the night. Both turnovers led to eventual BMS touchdowns. Kristian Smith added six tackles and Aaron Nicholson five.
On the offensive side BMS rushed for 144 yards and scored on four of their first five possessions. Paul led the way with eight carries for 82 yards and a touchdown, and Joshua Gunter contributed 44 yards on eight carries and a touchdown as well. Quarterback Caleb Winton completed four-of-six passes for 64 yards and a pair of touchdowns, including a 21-yard strike to Drew Williamson between two defenders and a 25-yard connection with Booker, who shook four tackles en route to the end zone. C. Winton was also 3-for-3 on two-point conversion passes, to Williamson, Paul and Kristian Smith.
Brewton Middle School (1-0) will next play this Tuesday night, when it travels to Florala, to take on a 1-0 team that won its season-opener last week.
