Brewton Middle School’s football Tigers were left with a handful of “what ifs” Tuesday night when they failed to capitalize on several scoring opportunities and limped home with a 10-0 loss to Florala.
The Tigers, which fell to 1-1 with the loss, had three chances to score – including starting two drives inside the Florala 7-yard line in the first half – and failed to put it in the end zone each time. Both of those drives were the result of first-half interceptions by safety Caleb Winton (who had three interceptions for 77 total return yards in the first half). He returned the first one 35 yards to the 7 and the other 42 yards to the 2. On both occasions, the Tigers netted just 6 yards on eight plays and had two costly penalties to help a stingy Florala team hold them out of the end zone.
In the meantime, Florala booked a safety in the first quarter and threw a 45-yard touchdown pass on third down and added a two-point conversion with 35 seconds left in the first half to provide all the scoring for the game.
Other than that one scoring play, the Tiger defense played well for the second straight game. Anchored by linebacker Hunter Brittain, who had 12 total tackles – including 9 solos, one fumble caused and one fumble recovery – BMS only allowed 54 rushing yards and just 48 through the air for 102 total yards. Jarred Baker added six tackles for the Tigers, while JoJo Booker and Kristian Smith added four, and Joshua Winton and Aaron Nicholson contributed three apiece. C. Winton’s three interceptions gives him four already in two games.
Offensively, the Tigers managed only 101 total yards and just three first downs, with 34 of their 43 rushing yards coming from Marcus Paul (on 14 grueling carries). C. Winton completed 5-of-8 passes for 58 yards. Booker caught two passes for 22 yards, while J. Winton hauled one in for 17 yards. Drew Williamson caught one for 16 and Smith one for 3.
BMS plays its next game Thursday at Brewton Municipal Stadium, where it welcomes UMS-Wright for a 6:00 p.m. kickoff.
