Brewton voters will have one last opportunity to cast a vote for their candidate of choice in Tuesday’s run off election for the top spot in the city and to choose a representative for the citizens of District 3.
On the ballot for the position of mayor is Yank Lovelace and Frank Nalty — two candidates who will be facing a run off after David Jennings was defeated in the August municipal election.
In the race for the District 3 council seat, Bill Littles will be facing Butch McKenzie in the run off after the field was narrowed from for candidates to two. Robert Watson and Jesse Redmon were defeated in the race leaving Littles and McKenzie to battle for the seat.
City Clerk John Angel said a prediction for voter turn out for Tuesday’s run off is difficult — if not impossible to make.
“You just can’t project what the turn out will be in a race like this,” Angel said. “It just depends on who gets who out to vote. Historically, however, when you have a slim ballot, the turn out is low.”
Angel said voters who wish to cast their vote by absentee ballot had to do so before Oct. 4.
“We have about the same density of absentee ballots as we did in the August election,” Angel said. “We have received about 90 absentee ballots. We had a few people to come in on Friday to vote absentee, but the deadline for absentee voting was Thursday.”
Two polling places will be open Tuesday to allow voters across the city to cast their vote. The Brewton Community Center, located behind the Brewton city hall complex on Douglas Avenue, will be open as well as the Thomas E. McMillan Museum polling location on the campus of Jefferson Davis Community College in the Alco area, Angel said.
