In their first two games of the season Friday and Saturday in Pensacola against Pensacola State and Mississippi Gulf Coast, the Jefferson Davis Community College Warhawk basketball teams fell to 0-2.
The Warhawks started the year 0-1 with a 76-69 loss to PSC before falling to 0-2 with a 91-51 loss to Mississippi Gulf Coast.
In their first game against PSC, JDCC was outscored 38-31 in the first quarter before both teams scored 38 points in the second half.
“We jumped on PSC to start the game 16-4 and were really looking good but then they got their feet under them and came back, going into half 38-31 their way,” JDCC head coach Allen Gainer said. “They pulled out to a 12-point lead, 60-48, only to have us fight back and claim the lead 64-62 with two minutes left. We ran out of gas and they outscored us 14-5 over the last two minutes.”
Dee Jay Braggs led JDCC with 16 points followed by 15 from Chris Oden and 14 from Anthony Bell. Braggs led with seven rebounds each while Fletcher Forte had three assists. Braggs, Kenny Nabors and Adrian Rich had one block each while Forte had five steals.
Against Gulf Coast of Mississippi, JDCC was outscored 43-22 in the first half and 48-29 in the second half to take the 40-point loss.
“Gulf Coast dominated us from the start, leading 25-9 after 10 minutes and 43-22 at the half,” Gainer said. “They continued to pull away in the second half and eventually won 91-51. We had a very quick turnaround —playing until 9:30 p.m. on Friday and returning to the court Saturday at 2:30 p.m.— and I think it hurt us. They are very good. They were preseason No. 22 in the country. They exposed a lot of our weaknesses, so hopefully we can grow from the experience and get better.”
Braggs led with 15 points while Rich led with five rebounds, Forte led with three assists and Demetrick Goodwin had two steals.
JDCC will be back in action Saturday at home when they have their home opener at 2 p.m. against William Carey College.
