The restructuring of existing loans for the city of East Brewton have freed up some funds that will help make some new equipment possible for the city.

Mayor Terry Clark said the bond money now available for the city’s use will be used to purchase much-needed vehicles for various departments.

“This renewal on our loans will allow us to be able to purchase a garbage truck that we really need right now,” Clark said. “We are also looking to purchase a new pick-up truck for the street department and a new car for our police department.”

Clark said the funds would allow for two new police cars, however only one car will be purchased in the near future.

Additional funds freed up in the bond note will be used to complete renovations at the fire department, Clark said.

Also during Monday’s meeting of the East Brewton City Council, members also agreed on a name for a street created with the construction of a new retail store in the city. After discussion, Ned Sibert suggested the street be named Katie Bob Lane. The vote to approve the naming of the street was unanimous to name the street after the late mother of Clark.

In other business, the council

• Heard from East Brewton Police Chief Kenny Brazile on the placement of signs prohibiting the use of Jake brakes through the city. Brazile said signs will be ordered based on the ordinance recently passed by the council with final approval of signs and placement required from the Alabama Department of Transportation. The council had already agreed to an ordinance that would prohibit large trucks from using Jake brakes inside the city limits with violators subject to a $100 fine plus court costs;

• Agreed to a one-time bonus of $100 for city employees in anticipation of Christmas with employees to receive a ham or turkey for the holidays as well;

• Set the city Christmas party for Dec. 14 at the East Brewton Civic Center at 6:30 p.m. for employees and their guest;

• Passed a resolution approving the standards for purchasing, maintenance of financial records and procurement procedures in connection with a new sewer grant awarded to the city.
