With the early stages of construction already under way, the final parcel on the Walmart property will have a new tenant early in 2013.
Steve Yuhasz, community development director for the City of Brewton, said the parcel was sold earlier this year to a business already established in the community.
“This isn’t a new business,” Yuhasz said. “The ABC Store will be relocating to the new building once construction is complete.”
The Alabama Beverage Control Board’s Brewton store is currently located in the Brewton Heights Shopping Center — home to the store for several years.
“They are already moving some dirt there,” Yuhasz said. “The construction work is officially under way. The building will not be a massive structure and construction should only last a couple of months.”
Although no other new businesses have been announced in the community, Yuhasz said the doors to Brewton are always open.
“We don’t have anything on the horizon for now, but we continue to work for economic growth,” Yuhasz said. “We are keeping our feelers out and always keep an open door to any new developments.”
With a handful of new businesses opening in Brewton during 2012, growth is evident in the community.
“The Donut Delite is really bustling over there,” Yuhasz said. “They are staying busy and that’s good for everyone.”
Other businesses who are showing progress and growth include Farmers Home Furniture and Tractor Supply Company. Farmers Home Furniture opened in April in the former Walmart location in the Douglas Square shopping center. Tractor Supply Company opened in September in the former Winn-Dixie location on Douglas Avenue.
Title Max and Central Credit opened inearlier this year in Brewton as well.
“We are do our best every chance we get,” Yuhasz said of community development for Brewton. “We don’t have any aggressive interest in the city right now, but we are always looking.”
