Plans for a new T.R. Miller High School are coming along ó and the project could be out for bid as early as February, Superintendent Lynn Smith said.
“We would like to get started this summer,” he said. “We’ll be doing this in two phases.”
The project will see new classrooms built on the same site as the current school, with the gym and auditorium remaining. The school will eventually be configured in a T, with the top of the T at Tiger Drive, and most of the classrooms along that part of the building.
New classrooms will be build in the first phase, and Smith said students will likely be using those new classrooms by fall 2014.
The lunchroom and home economics classroom section will be torn down as part of phase one, then new classrooms will be built along with a new lunchroom, Smith said.
In Phase 2, which Smith said needs to begin in summer 2014, the second and third halls and the office area will be torn down.
Science classrooms and computer labs will remain, and Smith said he does not think the school will need any portables as the project moves along.
“We hope to be through by spring 2015,” he said. “The first part will start in spring 2013.”
Smith said the new school will be a welcome one not only for students but also for the community.
“It will be very nice,” he said. “The kids are excited, and we will have a nice presence on Highway 31 as people come into town.”
