The new year of 2013 started out a good year for the W.S. Neal B-team and varsity Eagle basketball teams Friday night at home against Flomaton as the B-team picked up their first win of the season while the varsity Eagles picked up their third win of the season. The Lady Eagles of East Brewton remained winless.
The B-team Eagles improved their record to 1-2 this season with a 37-26 win over the Hurricanes. In girls action, the Lady Eagles lost 47-29 to drop to 0-6. In varsity action, the Eagles defeated the Hurricanes 43-34 to get back to .500 this season as they improved to 3-3.
W.S. Neal will be back in action Tuesday at home against T.R. Miller in an area game. W.S. Neal will continue their home stand Friday when they host Cottage Hill in another area game at 4:30 p.m.
The Eagles will take on Bayside Academy at home on Tuesday, Jan. 15 to end their four-game home stand.

WSN B-team 37, Flomaton 26
The W.S. Neal Eagle B-team used a 10-0 run to start the game to help set the momentum and propel them to a 36-26 win to get their first win of the season Friday night at home against Flomaton.
Eight Eagles scored in the win as Antwan Jones led the way with 13 points and Ty Alexander finished with eight points. Quantae Barksdale added six points in the win and Dalton Shell added three points. Treylon Watson, Troy Lewis and Tre Smith all finished with two points each while Lane Chavers had one point in the win.
The Eagles led Flomaton 15-3 after one quarter of play and 21-11 at the half after the Hurricanes used an 8-6 run in the second quarter to cut the lead to 10 points.
The Eagles took a 27-13 lead with 2:51 left in the third quarter before the Hurricanes scored two points on free throws in the final minutes to cut the lead to 27-15 heading into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth, Flomaton would cut the Eagle lead to 29-19 with 4:41 left to play, but the Eagles used a 6-0 run to take a 35-19 lead with 3:54 left to help get the win by 11.
W.S. Neal was 3-for-8 from the free throw line in the win while Flomaton shot 8-for-17.

Flomaton 47, WSN Lady Eagles 29
The Flomaton Lady Hurricanes used a 20-0 run over a span of the second and third quarters to take down the W.S. Neal Lady Eagles by 18 points Friday night in East Brewton, 47-29.
The Lady Hurricanes struck early and often against W.S. Neal as they broke a 2-2 tie with 5:44 left in the first quarter to go on a 9-0 run and take an 11-2 lead with 53 seconds.
W.S. Neal would get two points to end the quarter trailing 11-4.
In the second quarter, W.S. Neal cut the Lady Hurricane lead to 15-10 with 6:06 left before the half. That would be the final points of the quarter for W.S. Neal as Flomaton went on to outscore the Lady Eagles 20-6 and grab a 31-10 lead at the half.
Flomaton would increase their run to 20-0 and their lead to 35-10 with 5:53 left in the third quarter before the Eagles ended the run with a KeKe Floyd lay up at the 5:28 mark.
Flomaton would outscore W.S. Neal 15-12 in the third quarter to take a 24-point lead into the fourth quarter, 46-22.
In the final quarter of play, the Lady Eagles of East Brewton would end the game on a 7-1 run, but Flomaton hung on for the win.
“We still have to work, but I think we recognize our potential,” W.S. Neal Lady Eagle head coach Kason Whitten said. “We are going to get things together as quickly as possible. I saw a lot of positive things out there tonight that we are going to build on as we get into area play.”
Floyd and Glenasia Butler led W.S. Neal in the loss with eight points each while Tiana Smith finished with four points. Courtney Emmons added three points and Khadijah Barton, Daisha Flowers and Taylor Burns all had two points each in the loss.
W.S. Neal shot 3-for-7 from the free throw line while the Hurricanes were 13-for-28.

WSN varsity boys 43, Flomaton 34
The W.S. Neal varsity Eagle basketball team picked up their second straight win and third overall Friday night at home against Flomaton as they came away with a 43-34 win.
W.S. Neal head coach Kason Whitten said the way for his Eagles—who last played on Saturday, Dec. 21 in the Escambia County tournament and came away with a win over T.R. Miller—left him with mixed emotions.
“It is nerve-racking because you have to get your rhythm back,” Whitten said. “The layoff causes a little imbalance in your rhythm and some different things that we had going into the break. So it is bitter trying to get your rhythm back but it is sweet because you start out on that good foot. I guess I am happy, but we still have a lot of work to do.”
In the first quarter Friday night, W.S. Neal fell behind Flomaton 2-0 early, but used a 10-0 run in the quarter to help lead them to a 10-3 lead after one quarter of play.
The two teams struggled on offense in the second quarter with only 10 combined points being scored between the two teams. W.S. Neal held a 7-3 advantage over the Hurricanes in the quarter to increase their lead by four and take an 11-point lead into the locker rooms at the halftime break, 17-6.
In the third quarter, the Hurricanes came out on fire as they used an 8-0 run in the quarter to cut the Eagles lead to two points, 23-21, with 2:11 left to play. With their lead cut to two points, W.S. Neal used a 5-0 run of their own to take a 28-21 lead with 26 seconds left to play. Flomaton would cut the lead to 28-23 heading in the final seconds as the Eagles took a five-point lead into the fourth and final quarter of play. Flomaton would outscore the Eagles 17-11 in the third.
In the fourth quarter, Flomaton cut the Eagle lead to three points on three different occasions—the last time coming with 3:42 left in the game.
From that point on, with a 32-29 lead, W.S. Neal outscored the Hurricanes 11-5 to end the game with the nine-point win. W.S. Neal outscored Flomaton 15-11 in the final quarter of play.
Trevor Burns led W.S. Neal with 13 points while D.J. Hodges added nine. Josiah Nettles and Tyshawn Davis both finished with eight points each while Montrel Banks added three points. Tavin Ingrahm chipped in two points.
The Eagles were 6-for-11 from the free throw line in the win while Flomaton shot 4-for-12.
