Brewton and East Brewton residents may see some flooding in the area over the next 24 to 48 hours as waters of Murder Creek are expected to reach flood stage by Tuesday afternoon.

National Weather Service forecasters are predicting that waters would reach the 22-foot flood stage level Tuesday and could continue to rise to more than 23 feet before the waters begin to recede on Thursday.

As of early Monday, the waters were estimated at just under 14 feet and were rising due to the heavy rainfall to the north of Escambia County.

A flood warning is also in place for the Conecuh River effective until further notice. As of Monday, the waters were 14.5-feet with flood stage at 27 feet for the river. Forecasters say waters are expected to rise above flood stage by Friday.

The flood warning was issued through the National Weather Service Monday and continues through 6:15 a.m. Tuesday.

As of Monday at noon, forecasters say between three and five inches of rain had fallen overnight in the warning area, which covers Escambia County. A large amount of rain had fallen in Conecuh and Covington Counties, which will have a significant impact on Escambia County.

With continued rain expected over the entire area Monday evening and into Tuesday, an additional three to five inches of rainfall is possible further increasing the chances for flooding along both Murder Creek and Conecuh River.

As warnings change or expire, officials will determine need for possible evacuations.
