Rumors fly in East Brewton

Rumors spreading through the East Brewton community have some residents anxious to show up at the next meeting of the city’s council.

East Brewton Mayor Terry Clark and Councilman Ludon Simmons confirmed that a meeting took place last Thursday between officials in Brewton and East Brewton — but they did not disclose the topic of the meeting.

“It will come out as soon as is necessary,” Simmons said.

While neither the public nor the media were notified of last week’s meeting, it apparently does not violate the state’s open meetings law because workshops involving a quorum of public boards are allowed as long as no action is taken.

But rumors about the topic of the meeting — including those posted on social media — state that East Brewton is considering merging its police department with Brewton’s.

Some residents have said they plan to attend the next council meeting to voice their opinions about the possibility.

The East Brewton council’s next meeting is set for Monday, Feb. 25 at 5:30 p.m. in the council chambers at East Brewton City Hall on Forrest Avenue.

The meetings are open to the public.
