Bike rodeo set for Saturday

Brewton area children have a chance to show off their cycling skills — and win a free bicycle — at the Brewton Police Department’s first bike rodeo Saturday.

Police Chief Monte McGougin said the event is a chance to get children accustomed to seeing police officers in a positive light.

“We want to relay to kids and parents that we are here for the community,” he said. “We’re fathers, we’re mothers; we care about the community.”

The bike rodeo will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the John L. Fisher Community Center (the old Brewton Middle School) on Liles Boulevard.

After some lessons in bike safety, a bicycle obstacle course will be held for two age groups, 6-8 and 9-12. A boy and girl winner in each age group will win a bicycle.

There will also be hot dogs and drinks for lunch and a bounce house for younger children, McGougin said.
