Students from 19 Phi Theta Kappa chapters filled the auditorium at Jefferson Davis Community College Friday to kick off a weekend of seminars, awards and activities for the college honor society’s Alabama Regional Convention.
“It’s huge,” said Sharon Peacock, sponsor for the local PTK group. “We were very excited to do this.”
The college was able to host the event because JDCC student Carlee Jernigan is the state organization’s president.
This weekend, the group will elect new statewide officers. Candidates had already begun campaigning as soon as registration began on Friday.
Mayor Yank Lovelace and JDCC president Dr. Dan Bain welcomed students to campus.
Peacock said the event is a boon for Brewton as well.
“The hotels are totally booked,” she said.
Activities this weekend included educational forums, a scavenger hunt and dance on Friday, with more forums and awards and elections set for today.
Vicki Fussell, director of Hope Place in Brewton, will be the guest speaker after lunch.
