Gaming consoles and televisions will be electrifying the ATN Center on the campus of Jefferson Davis Community College this weekend as the City of Brewton hosts its first “Evolution of the Game” event and tournament.
Coordinating the event are Connie Baggett, program director for the City of Brewton; Anthony Hardy, IT Director for JDCC; and James Lowell, JDCC student and the man behind the idea for the event.
“James has done a tremendous amount of preparation for the tournament event,” Hardy said. “This was his idea and he’s organized a lot of the logistics for the tournament.”
Hardy said the event — which is set to begin at 10 a.m. Saturday — will be an opportunity for gamers of all levels to enjoy the day.
“We have a couple of games in the tournament that are geared toward the 13 and up crowd and some for the younger players,” Hardy said. “This is a family-friendly event and we will have the more mature games sequestered from the main area to avoid any conflicts.”
Baggett said set-up has already begun with planning still being completed.
“These last few days will be busy,” Baggett said. “I’m picking up consoles and taking care of testing and making sure everything is ready for the event.”
Some of the consoles will be “throw backs” to days when gaming was just becoming popular, Baggett said.
“We will have some older gaming systems set up during the day,” Baggett said. “We want people to enjoy looking back.”
In addition to electronic-style gaming activities, Baggett other games will be available for play during the day.
“We will have bridge, checkers and those kinds of games set up in the student center,” Baggett said. “There will also be video games available in the atrium of the ATN center. All of the games will be available to play free. Hardy said some time for regstration is running out.
“We have had 32 people sign up for a spot in the tournament,” Hardy said. “There are plenty of spaces left for players who want a shot at one of the $500 prizes.”
Registration is $10 per person per tournament event, Baggett said.

Lunch plates will be available with American General Life Insurance Company selling plates at $5 each with proceeds to benefit the John L. Fisher Community Center Project, Baggett said.
“This is going to be a fun event and is going to benefit the community center project as well,” Baggett said. “We want everyone to have a good time.”
