East Brewton City Council members agreed Monday to let the public voice their opinions on the policing duties in the city.

East Brewton officials have spoken with Brewton officials about the possibility of contracting with the Brewton Police Department to handle policing duties in East Brewton. The East Brewton council sought the opinion of Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange on the legality of the possibility.

After learning the cities have a legal right to negotiate a policing contract, East Brewton officials have decided to give the residents in the city a chance to stand up and be heard.

“This will be for East Brewton residents only,” East Brewton Mayor Terry Clark said.. “We want to give our residentsa chance to let us know how they feel about this possibility. We want to keep things as calm as possible, but we want to give them a choice to let their voices be heard.”

East Brewton residents are invited to voice their opinions on the subject at the next East Brewton City Council meeting set for May 13 at 5:30 p.m. in the council chambers at East Brewton City Hall.
