The spring movie series presented by the City of Brewton is continuing this week with a film that could address a subject effecting many families throughout the area.
“Bully,” is a 2011 film about bullying in the U.S. school system.
Connie Baggett, program director for the city of Brewton, says she isn’t sure very small children should watch the movie, but middle and high school students will be able to relate to the content.
“Lately bullying has come to the forefront of attention in schools that can spiral out of control,” Baggett said. “Our own community has had its own incidents. There have been several instances of complaints from parents in our own area.”
In anticipation of questions or concerns about bullying incidents that may arise while watching the movie, Baggett said arrangements have been made to have those issues answered.
“We have been in touch with the Jennifer Claire Moore Foundation in Baldwin County,” Baggett said.
This is an organization that was founded by her mother after Moore’s suicide in 1998. The foundation is sending a representative to help with a discussion on bullying after the movie”
Baggett said the film is certainly aimed at families, but may also be helpful for other leaders and adults in the community.
“We are encouraging parents, educators, church leaders and youth groups to come to Brewton City Hall to see the movie and then stay for a discussion,” Baggett said.
According to preview information concerning the presentation, the film follows the day-to-day lives of five students who face bullying on a daily basis. It particularly focuses on the deaths of two of the bullying victims. The film describes in great detail how the average American student cannot defend himself or herself against being bullied. It began as an R-rated movie but has since been edited to PG-13 so younger ages will be able to view it.
The presentation begins at 7 p.m. at the Brewton Community Center located on Douglas Avenue behind Brewton City Hall.
While students are admitted free, adult admission is $3. Popcorn will be provided, however guests are encouraged to bring their own drinks.
Ample seating is available, however early arrival will ensure quality viewing.
