A Lewis and Lewis expedition in East Brewton Thursday night didn’t quite turn out the way the adventurers may have planned.
East Brewton Police Investigator Russell Clausell said the two men, found seated in a vehicle on Mayo Street, were arrested on a variety of drug charges.
Maurice Lewis, 38, of 119 Mayo St.; and Maurice LaDawn Lewis, 30, of a Brewton address, were both arrested after Clausell and two other officers responded to a tip called into the department.
“We had gotten a phone call that Maurice Lewis was selling drugs at the 119 Mayo Street address,” Clausell said. “We were told he was responsible for selling marijuana, crack-cocaine and spice.”
“Spice” is synthetic marijuana, a new drug made illegal last year in the state of Alabama.
Clausell said he went to the residence assisted by Investigator Andy Miles and Auxiliary Officer Chuck Wiggins in response to the tip made to the department.
“We went to the residence to try and make contact with Lewis, but he was not there,” Clausell said. “We were told he was at a friends house on U.S. 29.”
Clausell said he spotted the vehicle of the homeowner at a later time on Mayo Street.
“When I saw the car I noticed it was occupied,” Clausell said. “I approached the car and found Maurice Lewis, the older one, in the vehicle. The younger Lewis was in the car and was still smoking what appeared to be a marijuana cigarette.”
With the activity of the pair in the vehicle as Clausell approached the vehicle, a search was made with various kinds of drugs and paraphernalia found in the car.
“It appears they had plans to sell some of the items we found in the vehicle during our search,” Clausell said. “We recovered several packages of synthetic marijuana or spice, marijuana, scales typically used to weigh marijuana and other drugs, a gun, ammunition and a large sum of cash.”
Maurice Lewis was charged with possession of a controlled substance, first-degree possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Maurice LaDawn Lewis was charged with first-degree possession of marijuana; possession of a controlled substance – spice; possession of drug paraphernalia; two counts of intent to distribute; and a felon in possession of a firearm.
Both suspects were transported to the Escambia County Detention Center and booked on the charges against them. No information on bond was available as of press time Friday.
