East Brewton residents will have a chance to be heard next week concerning a possible change in police protection in the city.
A meeting of the East Brewton City Council is planned at 5:30 p.m. Monday and city residents will be given an opportunity to let city officials know how they feel about the possibility of merging its police department into the Brewton Police Department.
City Clerk Karen Singleton said the meeting is open to the public, however only East Brewton residents will be given an opportunity to speak on the subject of police duties in the city.
“It would be beneficial for those who want to speak Monday to call and asked to be added to the list we already have,” Singleton said. “We have already started a list of names of those people who want to be heard. It’s not absolutely necessary to be on the list, but it would help to keep the meeting in order.”
Last month, East Brewton Mayor Terry Clark said the May 13 meeting would have time allotted to hear from residents regarding the possible changes in police work being considered.
Previously, members of the council have discussed the possibility of contracting with the City of Brewton and Brewton Police Department to handle police and patrol duties for East Brewton.
An attorney general’s opinion tates a contract between the two city governments for police protection is legal.
Clark said Monday’s open meeting for the citizens of East Brewton would help council members put things into perspective before continuing their investigation into the possibility of any change in the East Brewton Police Department or their duties.
Meetings of the East Brewton City Council are held in the court room/council chambers at East Brewton City Hall on Forrest Avenue. Seating in the room is limited.
