The night sky over Burnt Corn Creek Park will sparkle with light May 30 in honor and remembrance of those who have fought the battle against cancer.
Gulf Winds Federal Credit Union and Georgia-Pacific are partnering to plan a birthday bash in recognition of the American Cancer Society’s 100th birthday.
Jessica Klenk with Gulf Winds said planning is already in full swing and is expected to be a beautiful ceremony at Burnt Corn Creek Park.
“If you’ve ever seen the luminaria ceremony at Relay for Life, you know this is going to be beautiful,” Klenk said. “We will be lighting luminaria for this ceremony and celebration, but we will also be adding sky lanterns to the event.”
Sky lanterns, Klenk said, will be lit and launched at the park in honor or in memory of those who have battled cancer.
Brenda Kern with Georgia Pacific said both luminaria and sky lanterns will be available for purchase for those who want to recognize a loved one who has been touched by cancer.
“There are so many people in our community that has been touched by cancer,” Kern said. “Even if it’s not us personally, we have friends or family members who have been affected by cancer. This is a time to remember those who have lost the battle and to honor and celebrate those who are beating the disease.”
Klenk said sky lanterns can be purchased for $15 each and luminaria available for $5 each.
“We will gather in the park around dusk to light the luminaria and launch the sky lanterns,” Klenk said. “It should be a beautiful ceremony.”
To purchase sky lanterns or luminaria, contact Klenk at Gulf Winds Federal Credit Union,  Brenda Kern at Georgia Pacific or Christy Black at Trustmark Bank by 5 p.m. May 28.
“We need to make sure that we have enough for everyone to be honored during the ceremony,” Klenk said.
The event will begin at 7:30 p.m. May 30 at Burnt Corn Creek Park near downtown.
