In a five-team jamboree Saturday in East Brewton at W.S. Neal Stadium, the W.S. Neal Eagle football team ended their spring training period with a tie against the Andalusia Bulldogs and a win against the Linden Patriots. The Eagles of East Brewton and Andalusia tied 6-6 while W.S. Neal shutout Linden 8-0. Teams played in two 12-minute quarters.
Overall, Andalusia went 0-1-1 on the day while Northview went 1-1 and W.S. Neal went 1-0-1. Hillcrest went 2-0 while Linden finished 0-2.
Northview defeated Andalusia 12-6 in the first game of the day while Hillcrest defeated Northview 22-12 after W.S. Neal and Andalusia’s 6-6 tie. After W.S. Neal defeated Linden 8-0, Hillcrest ended the days games with an 18-8 win over the Patriots.
W.S. Neal football head coach Doug Hoehn, who is entering his third year with the Eagles, said his team played pretty well Saturday.
“We had three penalties total, which over the course of full game, one was costly as it called back a touchdown,” Hoehn said. “We are working really hard on that to try and prevent that from happening. We had one turnover and for a spring game with only one turnover and three penalties…I was pretty happy. We are happy from the effort from the kids. They played hard and they played physical. I thought the defense played well in both games. Offensively we have to clean up our blocking schemes. We have three new guys up front this year and overall they played well. We just made some mistakes on our assignments several times. We will fix that over the summer though.”
Overall in their two games, W.S. Neal outscored their opponents 14-6. The Eagles had 181 yards rushing against Andalusia and 94 against Linden for a total of 275 rushing yards in two games. The Eagles finished the day with no yards passing.
The Eagle defense allowed 143 yards of offense to Andalusia with 93 coming on the ground and 50 in the air.
Against Linden, W.S. Neal allowed 72 total yards with 70 coming on the ground. For the day, W.S. Neal allowed 163 yards rushing and 52 passing for a total of 215.
Against Andalusia, Quinton Samuels rushed for 108 yards on 10 carries and scored a touchdown to lead in the tie. Zack Haveard had 72 yards on five carries. Against Linden, Samuels led with 10 carries for 62 yards.
Haveard had 17 yards on seven carries and one touchdown. Samuels finished with 170 yards on 20 carries and one touchdown on the day while Haveard had 89 yards on 12 carries and one touchdown.
Against Andalusia, Samuels had a 64-yard touchdown run. Eagle quarterback Antwan Jones was 0-for-3 on the day with one interception.
After having the week off for final exams, Hoehn said his Eagles will get back to work for their summer workouts Tuesday, May 28 after the Memorial Day holiday holiday on Monday, May 27.
