Nearing the end of their regular season, the 2013 Brewton Babe Ruth teams played their 15th and 16th games of the season Thursday and the Texas A&M Aggies came away with a sweep over the Kentucky Wildcats in East Brewton while the Auburn Tigers defeated the Tennessee Volunteers in Brewton.
The Aggies improved to 14-2 this year and remained in first place with a 6-5 win over the Wildcats in game one and an 11-3 win in game two. The Wildcats fell to 3-13 overall.
In Brewton, the Tigers defeated Tennessee 16-8 in game one and 13-5 in game two. With the wins, the Tigers improved to 8-8 while Tennessee dropped to 7-9 with the losses. The losses for Tennessee was their seventh straight as the Tigers of Auburn moved into second place with the sweep.
No stats or information from the Volunteers and Tigers game Thursday were known as of press time.
After Thursday’s games, the Aggies were in first place followed by Tennessee, Auburn and Kentucky.
Games will resume at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in both Brewton and East Brewton. The Aggies and Volunteers will play in Brewton at T.R. Miller High School while the Tigers and Wildcats will tangle in East Brewton at R.T. Johnson Park.
Following Thursday’s games, the 2013 regular season has only eight more games left for teams over the next two weeks. The regular season is set to end on Thursday, June 13.
Texas A&M 6-11, Kentucky 5-3
In game one Thursday, Christian Alvarez scored on a passed ball for the Aggies to break a 5-all tie in the sixth inning and give the Aggies a 6-5 win over Kentucky after the game was called due to time limit.
The game was back-and-forth all night as Kentucky led 2-1 after the first inning but saw the Aggies tie the game up in the second. Kentucky took a 3-2 lead in the third but saw the Aggies rally to take a 4-3 lead into the fourth. After a scoreless fourth inning for both teams, the Wildcats took a 5-4 lead in the top of the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth, the Aggies once again rallied to tie the game. In the top of the sixth, the Wildcats were held scoreless, but lost the game in the bottom half of the inning.
Tripp Floyd and Lane Chavers pitched in the win for the Aggies with Chavers being the pitcher of record. The duo went a combined six innings and allowed seven hits, five runs, walked seven and struck out 12 while hitting one batter in the win.
Jared Cooper and Colton Morris pitched in the loss for Kentucky with Morris being the pitcher of record. Cooper and Morris went 5 1/3 innings and allowed eight hits, six runs, walked five and struck out eight. Cooper had seven strikeouts in four innings of work.
At the plate for the Aggies, Drew Williamson had a single and a double while Floyd had a solo homerun and a single. Chavers had two singles and one RBI while Austin Holmes and Jordan Williams both had singles.
Ty McFerrin and River Johnson had one RBI each.
For the Wildcats of Kentucky, Sam Frazier, Dakota Graves, Connor Huskey and Cooper all had singles while Brandon Moye and Morris had a double each. Graves, Huskey and Cooper all had one RBI each.
In game two, the Aggies scored seven runs in the first inning and held the Wildcats to two hits to get the 11-3 win.
Holmes and Williams pitched in the win for the Aggies with Holmes earning the win. The duo went six innings and allowed two hits, three runs, walked five and struck out four.
At the plate for the Aggies, Jake Najor had a single and Chavers had two doubles and a single and two RBIs.
Holmes had a double and two singles and four RBIs while McFerrin had a single and one RBI.
O’Neil White had two doubles and two RBIs and Hayden Winchester had a single for the Aggies.
For Kentucky, Moye had a RBI double and Huskey had a single.
Frazier, Moye and Graves all pitched with Frazier taking the loss.
The trio went six innings and allowed 11 hits, 11 runs, walked two, struck out two and hit one.
Babe Ruth Tuesday
After suffering their first two losses of the season earlier in the year to the Auburn Tigers, the Brewton Babe Ruth Texas A&M Aggies swept Auburn in their first matchup since the earlier defeats Tuesday night in East Brewton.
The wins for the Aggies improved their record to 12-2 this year. The Tigers fell to 6-8 after the Aggies handed them a 12-1 loss in game one and a 12-9 loss in game two. No stats or information from the game Tuesday were known as of press time.
The two wins for the Aggies solely put them in first place in the league’s standings this year as the second place Tennessee Volunteers were swept by Kentucky Tuesday in Brewton.
The Wildcats of Kentucky took a 4-3 win over Tennessee in game one before getting a 10-7 win in game two to earn the sweep and end their seven-game losing streak.
With the sweep for Kentucky, Tennessee saw their record go to 7-7 with their fifth straight loss while Kentucky’s record improved to 3-11 this season.
After Tuesday’s games, the Aggies were in first place followed by Tennessee, Auburn and Kentucky.

The Kentucky Wildcats ended their seven-game losing streak Tuesday in Brewton but increased the Tennessee Volunteers’ losing streak to five straight losses after they came away with a two-game sweep over the Vols.
The Wildcats took game one over Tennessee 4-3 and won game two 10-7.
In game one, after trailing 3-2 after the fifth inning, the Wildcats plated one run in the sixth inning and one in the seventh to edge out the Volunteers 4-3. Kentucky led 2-1 after the top of the fourth before falling to two runs for Tennessee.
Jared Cooper and Colton Morris teamed up for the win on the mound for Kentucky. Cooper and Morris combined to go seven innings and allowed four hits, three runs, walked one and struck out seven. For the Wildcats at the plate, Sam Frazier, Morris and Dakota Graves all had singles while Matt Hutchins had a single and one RBI and Brandon Moye had an RBI.
Matt Brown and P.J. Lovelace also had a single each with Lovelace having the RBI in the seventh inning for the eventual winning run.
For Tennessee, Russell Smith and Joshua Winton pitched in the loss. The duo went seven innings and allowed six hits, four runs, walked one and struck out six.
At the plate for Tennessee in the loss, Winton and Caleb Winton had a single each while Hunter Brittain had a double. Jason Konsler had a single and two RBIs while Smith had one RBI.
In game two, Kentucky trailed Tennessee 5-4 after the top of the fourth before scoring four runs in the bottom half of the inning to propel them to the three-run win.
Connor Huskey earned the win on the mound for Kentucky. He went six innings and allowed nine hits, seven runs, walked and hit two batters while striking out four.
Frazier had two singles in the win and Moye had a single. Morris had one RBI along with Matt Brown. Hutchins had a double in the win.
For Tennessee, Caleb Winton and Joshua Winton took the loss on the mound. The Winton twins combined to pitch five innings in the loss and allowed four hits, 10 runs, walked 10, struck out five and hit one batter.
Brittain led Tennessee in the loss at the plate as he finished with two singles and a homerun and one RBI. Caleb Winton had a single while Smith had two singles. Christopher Gehman added a single and Tyler Baxter had an RBI.
Aaron Bosarge finished with a single and two RBIs while Troy Lewis had a single and two RBIs.
