With the game tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning Thursday night in Evergreen, the East Brewton 12U Cal Ripken all-star baseball team was looking to get a runner in scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. From there, Sawyer Lewis executed the bunt perfectly and was picked up by Andalusia pitcher Sebaskin Stallworth who then tried to throw out East Brewton’s Tyler Pierce. Instead, the ball got away from Stallworth and Pierce came around and scored the winning run to give East Brewton a 4-3 opening round win over the Andalusia all-stars.
Both teams scored two runs each in the first inning and East Brewton followed with a run in the second inning to take a 3-2 lead. After a scoreless third inning, Andalusia tied the game in the top of the fourth inning. Neither team would score until the sixth inning when East Brewton was able to come away with the one-run win.
Jacoby Hawthorne earned the win on the mound for East Brewton going the complete game of six innings. He allowed three runs on three hits, walked three, hit one and struck out 15.
At the plate for East Brewton, Hawthorne had a single and Morgan Riley had a single. Riley had one RBI.
With the win Thursday, East Brewton will play again today at 10 a.m. against the Brewton/Covington County winner from Friday night. If East Brewton wins their 10 a.m. game, they will play again at 6 p.m. Saturday night. With a loss in their 10 a.m. game, East Brewton will play at 2 p.m.
