A Brewton man was killed and his twin sister injured in a single-vehicle crash Monday just north of Brewton.
Edward “Joey” Allen, 25, was killed when the 2001 Ford Explorer he was a passenger in left the roadway and overturned, according to a report from the Alabama State Troopers Evergreen post.
Virginia “Jenny” Allen, also 25, was injured in the incident and was transported to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, Fla., to be treated for her injuries. No details on her condition were available as of press time, however friends say her condition is not critical and she is expected to recover.
The crash occurred at approximately 6:20 Monday evening at the 76-mile marker on U.S. 31 near Kirkland Road, troopers said.
Troopers also say that Edward Allen was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the incident.
Joey Allen was employed at Donut Delight in Brewton where his boss and co-workers say he “enjoyed his job.”
Robin Bare, owner and manager at the local donut shop, said Allen will be missed by co-workers and customers alike.
“We will greatly miss him here,” Bare said. “He was a valuable employee for us and a good person who enjoyed making people happy.”
Bare said the young baker had been a part of the business since shortly after it opened eight months ago.
“He came to work here right after we opened and he was well liked by all of us,” Bare said. “He was just part of our little family here.”
Alice Grantham, a co-worker with Allen, said the young man had a giving and caring personality that was obvious to those around him.
“You just couldn’t help but love him,” Grantham said. “He was a sweetheart. He wa proud of what he did and loved to help people. He was just that kind of person to help people when he could.”
Bare said co-workers and customers at Donut Delight are working to help raise money to help the family with expenses following the tragic crash.
“We want to do what ever we can to help out,” Bare said. “The family didn’t have life insurance for Joey. We are taking donations to help with those expenses.”
Bare said a card is also available for those customers who would like to sign for the family as well as the opportunity for making a donation at the store.
“Joey’s goal in life was to find a good woman and have a family,” Bare said. “He will be deeply missed, but we know he’s in God’s hands now and he has found his happiness.”
Obituary and funeral information for Allen was not available as of press time Tuesday. Services will be handled by Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.
