Brewton police have made an arrest in a weekend shooting incident that has an 18-year-old man facing assault charges.

Montal Montgomery, 18, of Brooks Street in Brewton, was taken into custody at his residence after Brewton investigators found answers surrounding a suspected shooting incident July 13. He has been charged with second-degree assault.

Lt. Brock Holt said the arrest was the result of interviews with witnesses at the alleged incident and the suspect in the case.

“Based on information we got from witnesses after the event, Montal Montgomery was named as the suspect in the case,” Holt said. “We went to his home on Brooks Street and asked him some questions about the incident. During out interview with him, he admitted to the shooting.”

The victim, who has not been named, was injured in the leg below the knee, Holt said.

“The wound was not life-threatening,” Holt said. “He was taken to D.W. McMillan Hospital where he was treated and released just a short while after going to the hospital.”

Holt said according to witnesses interviewed during the investigation of the case, Montgomery has been accused of being involved in a dispute with one – possibly two – individuals prior to the incident.

“There had been an ongoing dispute between Montgomery and the victim according to witnesses,” Holt said. “The dispute apparently escalated during the evening and shots were fired during the confrontation.”

Holt said an investigation is continuing in the case.

Montgomery was transported to the Escambia County Detention Center and booked on the charges against him. He was later released on bond. No information on bond amount was immediately available.
