A Brewton man died Sunday night in a Biloxi, Miss., medical facility from what officials believed were injuries sustained in a vehicle crash. The victim has now become the subject of a homicide investigation.

Donald Morris, 59, of Brewton died Sunday night in Biloxi and the case has evolved into a homicide investigation after the autopsy revealed a bullet in the victim’s head, according to Det. Christopher DeBack of the Biloxi Police Department, according to a report on the gulflive.com Website.

According to the report, Morris was involved in a single-vehicle crash at around 8:40 p.m. Sunday at Elmer and Division Streets in Biloxi. Police responded to the scene to find the mangled Ford Explorer Morris was reportedly driving at the time of the crash. Morris was seriously injured and was transported to Biloxi Regional Medical Center where he died about an hour later, officials said in the report.

Mississippi officers confirmed Morris was the driver of the vehicle and may have lost consciousness as he drove south on Main Street into the area where the vehicle was found. Officials said the vehicle drove through a fence at a vacant lot and flipped several times before coming to a final upright rest at the scene.

Morris was pronounced dead at 9:37 p.m. from what were believed to be injuries suffered in the accident, officials said. However, during a preliminary autopsy Monday morning, Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove discovered a bullet lodged in Morris’ head. An autopsy performed Monday confirmed Morris died from the gunshot wound to the head.

Mississippi police say another shooting incident was reported at around 9:30 p.m. Sunday, but officers are unsure of the two events are related. An investigation into both events is continuing.
