On Thursday, the T.R. Miller Lady Tiger volleyball teams had a busy day at Brewton Middle School as they hosted a summer play-date tournament.
Five varsity teams, three junior varsity teams and two middle school teams played on three different courts in a day filled with summer volleyball games.
T.R. Miller, Monroe County, Jay, Baldwin County and Andalusia were the five varsity teams in action while Andalusia, T.R. Miller and Monroe County’s JV teams played in junior varsity action. In middle school action, Brewton and Andalusia’s middle schools were the lone teams.
T.R. Miller’s varsity team went 3-1 with wins over Monroe County, Andalusia and Jay while losing to Baldwin County. The JV team went 2-0 with wins over Andalusia and Monroe County while the Brewton Middle School team went 3-0 with wins over Andalusia.
“I thought we had a very good day today,” T.R. Miller Lady Tiger varsity and JV head coach Greg White said. “Our whole theme this summer has been to be aggressive on offense and we spent a lot of time on the offensive side of the ball today because of that work this summer. In my opinion, the games we were able to win today was because of our aggressiveness on offense. Against Baldwin County, we may have played our best games in the two losses today to them. Baldwin County is pretty good and I have no problem with the way my kids played against them. Baldwin County just made a few more plays than we did. My kids fought as hard as they did all day long.”
White said he thinks the tournament Thursday will help his team heading into the start of fall practice Monday.
“I think this is a nice little kick-start for us going into fall,” White said. “We struggled a little bit last year, but by the end of the season, we started to figure some things out. I thought going into this summer, we were going to be a little ahead of the game from where we were last year and we were. We just have to keep building on what we have done. There is always room for improvement, but I am very pleased with where are now. I think all three teams—the middle school, JV and varsity—all did a great job today.”
