It was smooth sailing in Brewton and East Brewton Monday as students got back in the swing of classes — even with some construction dust at T.R. Miller High School.

“Even with all the construction going on, there were no problems,” T.R. Miller Principal Mary Bell said. “We are very pleased with the way everything went. The freshmen are already fitting right in and adjusting. With the construction going on, the gym has been turned into the lunchroom and the students did really well.”

Enrollment is about the same at T.R. Miller, Bell said, holding at about 332 right now. Susan McKenzie, principal of W.S. Neal Elementary School said that everything went smoothly on day one.

“The numbers will fluctuate but right now we have 547 students enrolled,” she said. “Everything went well and we are off to a good start.”

Brewton City School Superintendent Lynn Smith agreed that everything has started off well. “It went very smoothly,” Smith said. “We didn’t lose anybody. The principals and teachers know what they are doing. Even with the construction going on at the high school, the students adjusted to it really well. The number of students is a little lower, but we expected that. I think everything has started off just fine.”

Ann Lambert, principal of Brewton Elementary School said teachers and students are prepared for a successful year. “

We have just the best teachers and everything is going smoothly,” Lambert said. “We had wonderful test scores and are starting off well. So far we have 459 students registered and that is about what we expected. There will be a few more who will come in later. About the only problem we had was a puppy that wanted to come to school.”
