Brewton Council of the Arts have announced the 2013-2014 season of performances lineup and it promises to be entertaining and fun for all ages.
Clay Lisenby, vice-president of the Brewton Council of the Arts, said they have chosen a wide range of events for the season.
“We have chosen some programs that should be entertaining to a wide range of ages and they are all family friendly,” Lisenby said. “Obviously we have the best deal in town for entertainment. We have three scheduled performances and have another tentative event set up for next spring.”
The first performance will take place on Thursday, Sept. 26, at 7 p.m. and will be entitled “Back on Broadway” celebrating some of the most dazzling shows that have played on the Great White Way. Ten members of the cast will perform some of the most popular scenes and songs taken from some of the latest Broadway hits. The Producers, Legally Blonde, Jersey Boys, Mary Poppins, Avenue Q, Mamma Mia and Memphis will be included along with some old favorites, Anything Goes, South Pacific, Evita, Hello Dolly and more.
The second performance of the season will be on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014 at 7 p.m. The Missoula Children’s Theatre is bringing the little red truck to town with everything it takes to mount a full-scale production, except for the cast, which will be made up of local children of the community.
This performance will be a rousing rendition of the old story of Rapunzel. This will be like no other Rapunzel and will feature characters from other fairy tales, such as ogres, Madame Gothel, corn and potato spies, unicorns, a bridge with trolls and billy goats gruff, gremlins, and pixies. There will even be a little confusion when the three (or is it four?) bears chase after Rapunzel, thinking that she is Goldilocks. Add in a prince and Rapunzel’s parents and it should make for an interesting evening.
The third performance of the season will be presented on Tuesday, April 8, at 7 p.m. This will be a dramatization of The Miracle Worker, the story of Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan. The story of courage and resilience of the human spirit has been a favorite for many years. It tells the story of one little girl who had to battle physical handicaps, and the teacher that helped her win the battle.  Helen Keller, deaf and blind from infancy, finds her way into the world of knowledge and understanding with the help of Anne Sullivan, her tutor. She overcomes rage and confusion to triumph over her physical disabilities. The Montana Repertory Theatre’s 2014 National Tour will bring this performance to Brewton.
“There will also be an in-school performance for the elementary grades county-wide,” Lisenby said. “It is not open to the general public, but will be presented so that every elementary-age child gets to attend for free. The Council also offers a program to carry middle school-age students on a field trip to the Shakespeare Theatre in Montgomery. This ‘Arts for Youth’ program is for middle school students from T.R. Miller and W.S. Neal.
Season tickets are now available. Patron family tickets are $100; Patron Single tickets are $50; Family tickets are $50; Adult tickets are $25; and Senior tickets (for ages over 59) are $20. Individual tickets may be bought at the door of each performance and are generally $15 for adults and $8 for students.
