The Brewton Middle School Tiger football team suffered their second straight defeat Thursday night at home as they dropped a 22-12 decision to the Excel Panthers. The loss dropped Brewton’s record this fall to 0-2.
After a scoreless first quarter for both teams, Excel got on the board first in the game as they scored on a 4-yard run with 20.3 seconds left before the half to take an 8-0 halftime lead after the successful two-point conversion.
Brewton was able to get on the board in the third quarter when Demarcus McMillan scored on a 4-yard run with 2:53 left in the quarter. After a failed two-point conversion, Brewton trailed Excel 8-6.
On the ensuing kickoff, Excel went 85 yards to pay dirt to take a 16-6 lead after a successful two-point conversion with 2:28 left in the quarter.
The Tigers of BMS were able to get their second score in the quarter to cut the lead to 16-12 with 14.7 seconds left when quarterback Drew Williamson hooked up with Stokes Jennings on a 28-yard pass play. The conversion attempt was no go as the Panthers held a four-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth, the Brewton defense held Excel and gave their offense a chance to score late in the game and get the win, but a Tiger fumble gave the ball back to the Panthers.
From there, Excel got an 18-yard score with 2:24 left in the game to go on top 22-12.
Brewton saw a later drive end at the Excel 21-yard line with under a minute to play as the Tigers held and took over on downs and ran the clock out for the 10-point win.
McMillan led Brewton’s rushing attack with 136 yards on 18 carries and had one touchdown. Williamson finished 6-for-10 passing with 81 yards and a touchdown pass. Williamson started the game 6-for-6. Jennings led the Brewton receivers with 52 yards on two catches and had a touchdown.
Overall, Brewton finished with 230 yards of offense with 149 on the ground on 26 carries and 81 in the air. Excel finished with 169 yards of offense with 124 coming on the ground from 32 carries. The Panthers had 45 yards in the air.
Brewton finished with 12 first downs while Excel had 10.
There was no seventh grade game. Brewton will travel to Earnest Ward Thursday for a 6 p.m. game.
