The W.S. Neal varsity Lady Eagle volleyball picked up their first win of the season Tuesday at home over the Hillcrest Lady Jaguars.
The Lady Eagles took set one 25-7 and took set two 25-16. In set three, W.S. Neal claimed another 25-7 win.
While the win was the first for the team this season, it was also the first for first-year W.S. Neal Lady Eagle head coach Jason Blaney. With the win, W.S. Neal improved to 1-2 overall this season.
“It is a big win to get under our belts,” Blaney said. “At times our girls hustled. I think we took it off in the second set. We are still working on being more mentally stronger. We kind of lowered our level of play there in the second set. We picked it up in the third set. This is a big win going into our big area match Thursday against T.R. Miller.”
In the win Tuesday, W.S. Neal defeated Hillcrest 3-0.
In set one, W.S. Neal took a 6-0 lead over Hillcrest behind the serving of Tykeria Nolan. After Hillcrest scored their first points of the set to cut the lead to 6-1, W.S. Neal built leads of 11-1, 12-3, 15-4 and 17-5. Hillcrest cut the lead to 17-6, but Nolan used another serving run to get W.S. Neal’s lead to 23-6. Jodi Busby would get a kill for point 24 and served the Eagles to point 25 to get the opening set win by 18 points.
In set two, W.S. Neal trailed Hillcrest 1-0 before getting a run of serves from Busby to help go on top 8-2.
With the game close with the Lady Eagles up 13-11, W.S. Neal then took a 22-1 lead behind Busby’s serving and three straight kills from Jasmine Crook. After Hillcrest cut the lead to 25-16, W.S. Neal got an ace from Mee Mee Lawson to end the game with the nine-point win.
In set three, Nolan led W.S. Neal with six serving points, four aces and two kills. Lawson added seven points and one ace while Tiffany Sawyer had four points and three aces to help aid in the win for the Lady Eagles.
W.S. Neal will travel to T.R. Miller Thursday for a 6 p.m. varsity game. The middle school teams will meet at 4 p.m. followed by the JV teams at 5 p.m.
