T.R. Miller’s cross country team will host their second-ever cross country meet this year. The meet will be held Saturday, Sept. 28 and the community is invited to attend.
“The whole meet is going to be at Brewton Middle School,” T.R. Miller cross country coach Rob Atkinson said. “We have designed this course for coaches and spectators. Most cross country courses you see the start and you see the finish to the race. This course, you will be able to see the entire race. There is no charge for admission or for parking so we are encouraging everyone to come out and see what a cross country course looks like.”
Right now Atkinson said there are 10 teams signed up.
“We are expecting a few more to make it 10-15 teams,” he said. “It won’t be a huge meet, but it is a good way for us to get started. I think it will be a great experience for the whole community. We have several teams coming from Mobile and north Florida so we have a pretty good area we are gathering from.”
The start time for the girls will be at 8:30 a.m. and the boys will be at 9:15 a.m. There will be a JV girls and boys after that at 9:45 a.m. 10:15 a.m. respectively. That race will be a two-mile race. The awards will be after that at 10:45 a.m.
“Our course is extremely challenging,” Atkinson said. “The times will not be PR (personal record) times. We have a lot of hills and a lot of ups and downs and curves. A lot of the courses you go to around here are flat and fast. This one is not fast. It is a gut-check to see how tough the kids are really are.”
Atkinson said seeing a course in person is a neat experience.
“We encourage everyone to come on out,” he said. “The first time I ever saw one was the first time I coached in one so I know the experience that people will have after having never seen one before. They are pretty neat to watch. Last year was our first year of ever hosting one here. I want to thank Jerry Morris.
“He has put in a lot of hours to help get the course ready and I want to thank him for all his help.”
Brewton Middle School is located on US 31 North. The address of the school is 1384 Old Castleberry Road.
Trophies will be awarded to the first and second place teams in the varsity and JV divisions.
The top-10 finishers in each varsity race will receive Columbia dri-fit shirts.
